The Bangalow Palm (Archontophoenix cunninghamiana) is a stunning Australian native palm known for its tall, slender trunk and graceful, arching fronds. Commonly found in subtropical rainforests along the east coast, it’s a fast-growing species that thrives in a wide range of garden settings. Ideal for adding height, movement, and lush greenery to landscapes, the Bangalow Palm is equally suited to both residential and commercial planting.

Growth Habits and Characteristics

Bangalow Palms grow in an upright, single-stemmed form with lush, feathered fronds that create a soft tropical canopy. Their tidy structure and slender profile make them perfect for layered plantings or lining paths and driveways.

Height: Can grow up to 12 metres in ideal conditions; often maintained at 3–6 metres in suburban gardens

Trunk: Smooth and slender with soft grey tones and slight ring markings

Fronds: Long, arching fronds with a feathery texture; typically 2–3 metres in length

Growth Rate: Fast-growing under the right conditions—ideal for quick results in new landscapes

Spacing: Narrow crown spread, making it excellent for compact spaces or dense plantings

As Archontophoenix cunninghamiana matures, it develops a graceful form and often sheds lower fronds naturally, giving it a clean, elegant silhouette without requiring much maintenance.

Maintenance and Care Requirements

The Bangalow Palm (Archontophoenix cunninghamiana) is a low-fuss, self-maintaining palm that flourishes with minimal attention once established.

Watering: Enjoys regular watering, especially in warmer months. Keep the soil consistently moist but well-drained.

Soil: Grows best in free-draining, rich loamy soil. Suitable for both garden beds and larger planters with good drainage.

Feeding: Use a slow-release palm fertiliser 2–3 times annually to support healthy green fronds and fast growth.

Pruning: Simply remove spent fronds as they naturally age. The palm has a self-cleaning habit, making maintenance easy.

Mulching: Keep a thick mulch layer around the base to retain moisture and keep roots cool – avoid contact with the trunk.

Archontophoenix cunninghamiana is surprisingly hardy and adaptable, tolerating light frosts and windy conditions once mature.
